Canada has one of the most comprehensive privacy laws in the world. There are two main laws, one for protection of citizens from their Federal Government (Privacy Act), and the second to protect citizens  from the private sector.(Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act)

These acts all regulate and limit the collection, use and disclosure of personal information. We take privacy very seriously, and your personal information will never be sold, traded, or divulged to any third parties without your express consent.  We hate SPAM email, and we will not send you any emails if you have asked us not to, period.
